The annual Students' Union awards is the most prestigious event hosted every year by the University of Huddersfield Students' Union. It sees nominees from every school and department put forward to recognise their support, dedication to and involvement with the SU and their students throughout the year. This includes nominations for and from students, staff and SU reps. Each year sees a different theme guide the branding for that SU awards. Previous themes have included 'night garden' and vintage circus, inspired by 2017's The Greatest Showman.

SU Awards

In 2020 we were tasked with branding the event as a 'Festival of Colour'. This moniker is commonly associated with Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colour, so the SU suggested that we lead with a 'colour burst' aesthetic. While the event wasn't associated with Holi in any official way, the SU loved the typically 'Holi' paint explosions and felt it not only reflected the fun, vibrancy and diversity of the Students' Union but also harked back to their previously successful Pride celebrations by incorporating colours of the rainbow flag. We began by creating the logo for the SU awards based on a super-high-res 'paint burst' image. The image was re-coloured to include most colours of the Pride flag (using every colour in sequence looked unnatural) and used both with and without the graphic and type overlay as both the leading motif and background elements for the event branding.

We provided a number of core design pieces to help establish the brand, including basic brand guidelines and graphic elements to allow the SU's in-house designers to create any further collateral required. Our final deliverables include the brand identity package and guidelines, web banners and social medial elements, a scalable A3 poster, slides for digital displays around the University and a 20-page programme for the night of the event.

Towards the end of 2020 with the outbreak of Coronavirus, the Students' Union Awards was initially postponed then later rescheduled to be presented via live stream on YouTube. To support the SU in delivering this event despite the ongoing pandemic we put together a series of motion graphics including an opening title slate, award winner template and 'the show must go on' promotional GIF for sharing via social media and an email bulletin. The event was a resounding success, so much so that the SU decided to stick with the very same branding a year later for the 2021 SU Awards, repurposing the promotional material and animated content to once again host a COVID-safe virtual event via live stream.
